Task: Charlies Angels:Poster Analysis

Charlie's Angles is an action thriller film released in 2003. Its about 3 woman who are set a mission to complete. This film has a mainly female dominant lead, which is similar to our film which is why we should look at this film poster and take ideas from it. Here is my analysis of the film poster.

The first thing i notice about the film poster is the name of the title in bold writing, "Charlie's Angels". This tells the audience that this film is going to contain atleast two main characters and as there discribed as "Angels", they are most likely to be female actresses.

The next thing i notice about the poster is the orange coloured fire as the background with a little triangle of white light shining on the woman. This tells me and the audience that this film could contain alot heat, intensity and action to it. The triangle of white light then shines on the three woman. This tells the audience that these 3 woman are most likely to be "Charlie's Angels".

The woman in the poster all seemed to be dressed in black, to give in my opinion a scense that they are slightly like ninjas. You cant see their faces to well but they are all captured doing a pose maybe meaning that they could be attractive woman. Which is ironic to the name of the film. Also with the 3 girls, they are quite small in the poster, but the shadows of them are big and take up most of the bottom half of the page. This suggests to me and the audience that all three woman put together make them a powerful team.

Finally i notice the actresses in the film and slogan underneath the title film. The film contains 3 well known actresses meaning they audiences looking at the poster know who they are and what films they have played previous parts in. The slogan is "Get some action", this tells the audience and me that this film is going to contain alot of action and should only be whatched if you like action packed films.

I think this we should look and take ideas from this poster from how the three woman are betrayed in the poster, this is because we need to get the point across to our audience about how Lola is the dominant lead in the film.

Task: Mr & mrs Smith: Poster Analysis

Mr& Mrs Smith is a hybrid genre film consisting of Romance/action/thriller genres. The film became a hit success in the USA and other international countries. Here is my analysis of the film poster and how we can use it help with our film poster.

The first thing that i notice about the poster are the two characters on either side of the poster against the white background. Both characters are wearing dominantly black clothing with the man holding the gun in his hand and the woman having a gun straped to her leg on her cut dress. This tells the audience that the film is likely to contain either voilence or action. Also both characters are both looking at the audience whilst standing on one leg. This tells me that these characters will mean business in the film.

The next thing which strikes me is the title of the film, "Mr and Mrs Smith", also in black writing with the "&" in orange. This tells the audience that these two characters in the poster are most likely to be a couple who work as a team. I then notice who the characters are in the film at the top of the poster. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. Both these stars are placed at the same level on the poster making them equally well known actor and actress. Audiences looking at this poster will also realise that they have played similar roles to what will be expected of them in the film.

Finally i notice at the bottom of the poster a quote that has been said by a critic or magazine. " Smart and sexy". This tells me that this quote has been placed there to try target the main audience the film wants to attract.

We should take ideas from this poster because the dominant lead in our film is female and so is in this film. We should look at how Angelina is betrayed in the poster and we could use that to help choose our shot to put in our poster.

Task: Wanted: Film poster analysis

Wanted is a action thriller film created by Universal entertainment. It became a hit success in both the USA and the UK. Here is my analysis of the film poster and how we can use it create ideas for our film poster.

The first thing i notice about the film poster is the arm of the woman leading to a gun in her hand which looks as if she is about to reload. The gun tells me that the film is most likely going to contain voilence or action. Then the background is of a browny coloured sky with the sun shining on the womans face and on her arm. This brightness reveals the woman in a serious look and also shows the many tatto's from the top of her arm to the bottom. This tells me that maybe these tatto's have something to do with her personality which can only be found out when whatching the film.

The next thing i notice is the top of the poster, where the name of the film is revealed and the actors and actresses in it aswell. When you read the title "wanted", the audience then realise that maybe the gun in the womans hand may lead to this film consisting of chasing someone. Above the name of the poster, we see the names of the people in the film. They are all on the same level and in the same lighting, meaning to me that all the actors and actresses are at the same level of famousness or how well known they are. Audiences will know Angelina Jolie from such films as Lara croft, which is also an action film and will most probabaly expect her to play a similar role. Morgan freeman will be known by Audiences as usually the helper in the film and know he will play a big role.

I then next notice the man underneath the arm of Angelina Jolie. He has a gun in either hand, which are both pointing towards us as we look at poster, this tells me that this guy could also be in this chase and maybe the reason he could be "wanted".

I think this film poster has a variety of techniques we should look at when creating our film poster. I think maybe the lighting of this poster should be looked at as it can give genre indicators and where the setting of the film may take place. I also think the gun in show should be looked at because it gives away who the dominant lead in the film will be which is what we want to show to our target audience.

Tomb Raider Film Poster Analysis

Tomb Raider is a film about a video game adventurer, Lara Croft, who comes to life in a movie where she races against time and villains to recover powerful, ancient artifacts. I chose this poster to analyze because it is a film with a female lead playing a heroic, action figure part, which is very similar to the lead in our film trailer. This means we can take ideas and conventions from posters like this and add them into ours.

The first obvious part of this poster that stands out is the picture of the female lead. She is wearing tight clothing with short shorts and has an endearing gaze on her face, with a large pout. This immediately brings sex appeal to the poster and gives away one possible side to her that the audience may want to see in the film. The fact she is holding a gun in her right hand shows the other side to this character, which is hard and suggests an action genre.

What I thought was unusual about this poster is that the actresses name is not mentioned on the poster. This may be because the actress is already very well known, or because they want to keep some mystery to the poster. The font of the title looks like it would be from a video game so it fits in with the rest of the poster. There is also some kind of ancient symbol in the background which could give away some more of the narrative but it still manages to keep some mystery to the poster.

Although there are references to people who contributed to the film at the bottom of the poster, like most posters include, the release date is bolder and stands out in the middle and underneath the references. This is because audiences will find this information important and making it stand out means audiences don't have to look for long to find it.

Overall, this poster uses typical conventions of an action poster, with dark colouring and the inclusion of a gun. But it also uses conventions from film posters with female leads, with the standard sexy and hard looking main character.

True Romance Film Poster Analysis

True Romance is a Quentin Tarrantino film, made in 1993, about the main character Clarence, who marries a hooker named Alabama. He steals cocaine from her pimp and tries to sell it in Hollywood, whilst the owners of the coke try to reclaim it.

The name of the film connotes a romance genre but the film poster portrays the complete opposite. The first thing you see when you look at the poster is a man holding a gun towards the camera, with a hard, uneasy expression on his face, this connotes a action/thriller vibe. Although, next to the man is a blonde haired woman staring at the man, with what looks like an angry but seductive gaze. This shows there is likely to be some kind of relationship between these two characters and a storyline is going to begin forming in the audience's minds. Another reason why this poster tempts the audience away from thinking the film is a romance is the font and colour the title is written in. It is in a rough font with red colouring, but the connotations this title gives of is more death and blood than love and romance. This could make the audience think that the relationship or romance that could occur in this film is likely to be messy and dramatic and not your typical romance film.

At the top of the poster there are two actors names above the characters in the poster's heads. This suggests the names are of the people in the poster, and tells the audience that these are the main characters. There are also five more names written in smaller lettering below the title, that are obviously not as important as the two written at the top but are still worth mentioning. The next thing in the poster that confirms what kind of romance the film includes is the tagline, 'Stealing. Cheating. Killing. Who says romance is dead?'. This shows the film is about crime and is likely to involve alot of action. All the writing apart from the title is white, so to emphasize the title and not take away its importance in catching it's audience's attention.

The poster seems to be aiming itself at a male audience with the main focus being on a man with a gun, but the introduction of romance and a hard, influential woman in the background may entice a female audience also.

Reservoir Dogs Poster Analysis

Reservoir Dogs is a film made by Quentin Tarantino in 1992, After a simple jewelery heist goes terribly wrong, the surviving criminals begin to suspect that one of them is a police informant.
Starting from the top of the poster, it is splattered with blood, this insinuates the genre of the film, which could be a violent action thriller.
The first words are written in small font (which shows the importance of the director at the time) even though Tarantino is well known now in 1992 this was his debut film.
The title is than shown in large black bold writing, it is highlighted, with a plain white background.
The image is of four smartly dressed men walking towards the camera this could show them being part of a group, and given the title they could be the "dogs".
Finally at the bottom of the page is "every dog has its day" which is the tag line which links the group of guys to dogs.
This film targets its male dominant audience, with a simple use of blood splatter and a male dominated cast, by not showing who is in the film it allows the audience to look at the poster itself and realise it stars, Tim Roth and Harvey Keitel.
What we gain from this poster is an idea on how to subtly show the genre with very little on the poster.

Task:Salt : Poster analysis

"Salt" is a film meant to be released for the summer of 2010. It is a film which the main lead is a female and is meant to be of the action genre, which is what our film is aiming to be. Here is my analysis of the film poster.

The first thing that strikes me when looking at this poster is the picture of the woman against the black background. This tells me that this woman is going to be the main focus in the film. She is looking right at the audience in the poster to try and attract our attention. Also her face gives nothing away and seems very serious suggesting to the audience that she is not there to be messed about with.

The next thing i notice is the actress who is in the film. Angelina Jolie, a very well known actress who has played a dominant female lead in action thrillers such as Wanted and Lara croft. This tells me that this film is probably going to be of a similar genre as she is experienced in the genre. The next thing i notice is the name of the film "salt". It is writen across the womans in big and small lettering, suggesting to me that this woman on the poster is most likely to be "salt" herself. Then to go with the name of the film, the poster consists of a question the audience dont know how to answer. "who is salt?". I think the creates of the poster have done this because it makes the audience want to know who "salt" is and will have to go whatch the film to find out or they go on the website which is found out at the bottom of the poster to find out more infomation about who she is.

I think this poster should definitley be looked at for our film poster because it is of the same genre as our film. I think we could take ideas from this from the colour scheme of the poster and what sort of picture to take of our main character if we wanted to our poster in this way.
