Kick Ass Poster analysis

Kick Ass is a new film coming out in March 2010, it is about an average boy who decides to become a superhero.
First impressions of this poster quite clearly show it to be a teaser poster as the majority of the poster detail is dedicated to genre and film indicators as apposed to actors, Directors and any institutional information is given tiny font in the bottom corner of the image.
Starting with the image itself it shows a bruised and beaten teenage boy in a homemade superhero outfit crawling out of a dumpster, this is a clear indicator to the film itself, with a high quality setting and good camera work, being blended in with a simple and effective image.
The name of the film is displayed on the front of the dumpster, the font being used for it is in the style of spray paint which is there to appeal to the teenage audience, just above the name of the film is a warning sign wich is another clear genre indicator and reiterates the violence in the film.
the tagline, i can't fly but i can kick your ass, shows that he is just an average boy with no special superpowers, but the classic teenage response of big headedness shows that he can still fight you.
This poster shows that little or no distributor information is required to make a good poster, the image itself and how the title is interpreted shows the importanc of the character and the genre of the film itself. From this poster we hope to gain the ability to make the image the most important thing on the page.

Research :Film Poster: Audiences Attraction

The main attraction of the film is- its stars, theme/genre, credits and often a tagline to create an appitite for audiences to ponder on. With sometimes a dozen or more different posters on display in a cinema foyer at any one time. Distributors and their designers must create new different posters which all stands out
Film posters may vary from international posters to more local posters. Alternatively, they differ in countries because of the countrys different consumer tastes. International posters will have a more broad vision, giving the main idea, story and genre indicaters to the film. More local posters show slightly more about the film, giving more away to the audiences in the hope that they will be more attracted to watch the film.

Empire Magazine Cover Analysis

I picked these three magazine covers because they all have their own qualities and techniques that we could use in the making of our magazine cover. The first magazine cover (left) shows a topless girl, this is what you see straight away. Next you probably likely to see her name 'Megan Fox' in capital, bold letters beside the image. This shows that the first thing to catch your eye is the sex appeal and the second is the name of the actress, which is likely to attract fans and men. Once you start looking closely at this magazine cover you can see this magazine has been named 'The Hot Issue' this shows the the cover is relying on the attractiveness of the woman on the front cover to lure audiences in and make the magazine seem 'hot'. Bearing in mind 'Empire Magazine' is well-known as a film magazine it seems strange that one of the last things to catch your eye is the name of the up and coming film this actress is actually starring in and the magazine is wishing to promote. This does seem unusual but the reason for this may be that the normal style seen in picture two, of the typical film actor and film name, may be becoming boring to audiences and magazines may be relying on things like sex appeal to catch audience's attention. This idea gives us the idea that we need to be more experimental with our magazine covers and think up ways to excite readers without our actress taking her clothes off!
On the other hand, in picture two the close up of the man's face is still effective and some what alluring because the male actor looks like he is staring at you with his unusually coloured eyes, this maybe what this magazine cover is relying on the attract readers to look at the magazine and eventually buy. Lastly, in picture three the thing that jumped out at me was the fact the picture of the man with the serious stare towards the camera is in front of the 'Empire' slogan. This makes the picture seem like its coming out of the magazine and is alot more effective. The techniques I discovered in all of these pictures are techniques we are going to consider including in our magazine cover so that our cover will stand out from all the rest and have the same effective qualities existing covers possess.

Task:Total Film: Magazine cover analysis

Total film is a rival film magazine company to Empire. Both have their ways of attract audiences. Here is my analysis of the total film magazine front cover and we could take ideas from this cover and use it in ours.

The first thing that stands out to me is the writing at the bottom third of the cover. "Sherlock" is in capitals and in white lettering and "Holmes" is in capitals in Blue lettering. This tells me that this magazine is mainly going to be about the film "Sherlock Holmes". I then notice the male figure which dominates the front cover. This to audiences is most likely to be the actor who plays Sherlock holmes. He is presented wearing quite smart clothing with a small grin on his face whilst looking at you. I think this has been done to try and grab the audiences reading this cover.

I then notice the name of the magazine. "Total film", the "film" is in in big bold lettering to catch the audiences of eye of what magazine it is. I finally notice the colour of the background compared to the colours of the writing. It is like a mix of white and blue with a white background over the mans head. This is good because it makes the man stand out from the magazine which is what Total film want to do.

I think this is a good film cover. It is kept very simple with no colour clashes. I think we should take ideas about what colours we should use for our background and how we should photo Lola. Maybe giving her a serious face or maybe a small grin depending on what looks best

Task: Film magazine: Front cover Analysis

This is Empires january 2007 magazine front cover. Empire magazine has been around for decades and has been renouned for its good write ups. Here is my analysis of its front cover and how we could use this to help when creating ours.

The first thing that strikes me when looking at this magazine front cover is the name of it. "Empire", In both magazines i have analysed, it has had the same font and colour writing. This tells me that this is how audiences recognise the magazine brand.

I then next notice the dominant picture which covers the majority of the magazine cover. The man in the picture is staring right at you with his hand trying to get you. That hand position is also how spiderman opens his web. This photo has been used to try and literally grab the audiences to make them buy the magazine.

I then notice that this magazine is mainly going to be about Spider-man. This is because it says about the new look Spiderman and talks about how the film is unmasked within the magazine. This tells the audience that this is most likely going to be the film to whatch right now.

I think this front cover is good because it is kept very simple. There is one main picture and does not have writing written all over the poster. I think we should take ideas of this magazine of how simple it is and how it attracts its audience. I also think that maybe we should take ideas of how we betray Lola, and maybe she could hold a pose similar to this to drag our audience towards the magazine.

Task: Empire Magazine: Cover analysis

This is the August 2008 magazine of Empire. Empire is one of the leading Film magazines in the world. Here is my analysis of this front cover and how we could use this cover to help with our own.

The first thing that catches my eye is the name of the film magazine. "Empire". It is in bold red colouring and takes up most of the top third of the cover to catch audiences attention.

I then notice the picture of Harry Potters face taking up most of the picture. He has a serious face on with him bleeding from cuts on his eye, cheek and chin and having a crack in his glasses. This tells me that this week/months empire magazine will be mainly focused on the new Harry Potter as he is the main attraction to the picture. This is then backed up with the massive writing next to Harry's face. "Massive preview special" telling the audience that this could be the big film of the month.

I then see the smaller writing on the left handside, which then reveals more about what articles are in the magazine including 6 new films coming up. I then notice the slogan Empire has adopted. "The worlds biggest movie magazine", this tells me and the audience that this is probably the one movie magazine we should read.

I think we should look at this film magazine and take ideas on how this magazine cover gets the main attraction of the magazine across. We should maybe take the idea of having a big picture of our main character to take most of the magazine cover up because then audiences will know what film to whatch in this month.

Fantastic Four DVD Cover Analysis

This DVD cover has the same effects on audiences that a film poster would. The way each of the characters are spaced on the screen shows how important they are in the film. This cover is slightly postmodern because its a film about four superheroes, three men and woman. And unusually the woman is the main feature and the focal point of the cover. This may be because the poster is relying on sex appeal to invite a male audience in, the female is also a well known actress, arguably one of the most famous out of the four characters, inviting in even more viewers. Seeing as we only have one main character in our film trailer we don't need her to stand out from other people on the poster but we need her to stand out next to other posters and films in competition. This is why we can take some of the conventions used in this poster, which includes sex appeal.
One of the other techniques used in this film poster is the display of a possible setting in the background, which could be familiar to the audience. We could use this technique in our poster but this may prove difficult because of the limitations on transport and time. Secondly, from this poster the audience can get an idea of what super powers each character has. For example, one character is surrounded by fire and the female character is slightly faded, suggesting she may have an invisibility power. This gives away some of the narrative of the film and creates a story in the viewers mind.
Overall, this poster gives us ideas for our poster because it clearly has a dominant female displayed in the poster. This benefits us because we can see what features the poster uses to make the female stand out and look like the more powerful character, which is what we need to make our poster successful.
