Inglorious Basterds Magazine Cover

The Font of "Empire" is clear to see, but obstructing the view of part of the word Is an image of a character in the film "Inglorious Basterds", right away it is clear to see that the selling point of this magazine is not the brand name on the magazine, but the fact that there is an image of Brad Pitt wielding a knife on the front, with the promise of an interview with him about his new film as well as on set access, this is used to gain the attention of Brad Pitt film fans aswell as general movie interest. Under the image of Brad and above the word "INGLORIOUS" is the word "Tarantino's" which is a word that all film fans drool over, the well known indie film director is involved in a film with Brad Pitt which guarentees A* quality. The image of Pitt itself looks a weird one, usually when he is on the front cover of a magazine it shows his sex appeal and machoness, but here it shows him in grubby old fashioned clothes, a huge scar on his throat, grubby hair with a less than attractive facial pose.
The second part of the page to catch your eye is at the top, the words "1001 greatest movie moments", this guarentees a sense of nostalgia for all film fans, and a chance to discuss and argue over what films should be in or at the top of the list. The three small images of Star Wars, North by Northwest and Lord of the Rings.
Down the side of the Cover is four large titles with a small description underneath, The first one is the word Surrogates, which is described with the word Bruce Willis which is another name that film fans know as a seal of approval. The second title is the word Exclusives, which is followed by some exciting films for the future, the Expendables, Avatar, Iron man 2 and New moon, all of these films are expected to do well in the box office, with none being small art house indie films.
The next title is "Verdicts" which is followed by Basterds, Pelham 123 and public enemies, these are again three big films with involvement from Denzel Washington, Johnny Depp and Brad Pitt, which is a selling point, again there are no front page opinions on small films.
Finally the cherry on top of advertising the title "Wowser" and the promise of Meagan Fox dressed as a cheerleader, this is now drawing every male reader to the magazine in the hope of catching the hottest leading lady of 2009.
This magazine cover is clear on what it hopes to gain from the beginning, by selling with three main techniques, Firstly the selling of big screen actors in this case a big picture of Brad Pitt and the mention of Bruce Willis, Secondly the use of upcoming blockbusters and any hint of a spoiler, finally the promise of a hot girl half naked will guarentee the selling of magazines, this means no hideously deformed person on the front cover or mention of the latest bollywood B-movie.
What we hope to gain from this is the ability to sell the cover and the film with only a few selling points, like this magazine has done.

Task: Catwoman: Dvd cover analysis

Catwoman was released on dvd in 2004 containing Halle Berry. Catwoman was originally in comic b0oks but was then reinevented as a film. Here is my Dvd analysis and what i think we could take from it and use when creating ours.

The first thing that strikes me in this dvd cover is the name of the film "Catwoman" and the star actress who plays the main character Halle berry. This tells the audience that the main character is well known across film media and will know she is a good actress. The "Catwoman"is in gold colours with O in the word being different to the rest. this tells me that there maybe a mystery to why she has been called the name.

The next thing i notice is the picture the audience gets to see. The majority of the picture is in dark, possibly sugesting that this "Catwoman" only comes out at dark. Then we see the majority of the picture covered by a moon with a close up of what the audience have to guess is Catwoman. This may tell audiences that this charcter only comes out when the moon is in show. The woman in show is wearing all black with a black mask covering her hair and has claws for hands. This tells me that maybe she doesnt want people to know her true identity and to prove even more that she is Catwoman.

Finally i notice the buildings in show. This tells me that Catwoman does her job within the city where it is quite a condense area. Also there is a change from night to daylight. This tells the audience that she may do her job in daylight or maybe sometime in the film is forced in to daylight, but will only be found out when whatching the film.

In my opinion i like this dvd cover, it doesnt give too much of the story line away but gives enough to convince the reader to watch it. I think we should take ideas from how the creators of this dvd cover have chosen the settings. We should look at how we can make a setting for Lola in our film and give the right impression to audiences.

Shutter Island is the latest Martin Scorsese film, based on the novel by Dennis Lahane. The largest image on the poster is the one of Leonardo Di Caprio who we can therefore assume is the protaganist. He is a highly famous and attractive male actor whose presence alone is a selling point for the film, this is also why his face is particularly profound in the poster. His expression is of apprehension which tells us there will be some element of danger in the film, the flame connotes this and the darkness appears to pose a threat to him, we cant see what the threat is and makes the audience want to see the film in oreder to find out. The other main image of the island itself is illuminated and is obviously going to be the setting of the action. The crashing waves that surround the island make it look menacing and there appears to be use of pathetic fallacy in the cliched 'storm that tells us something bad is going to happen'. The titles hard-edged font and red colouring relates to blood and again promote the idea of danger. The films director is also particularly highlighted in the poster because of his previous success, this is done to suggest a seal of quality and to entice people who have enjoyed his previous productions. The small caption 'someone is missing' is mysterious and makes the audience want to see if they'll be found.

Elements we may reinact in our poster are; the style of font (bold, hard-edged, red) and its effect on the audience, the use of dark colouring, the concealement of dangers identity creating enigma, focus on the charcter of the protaganist.

Task: James Bond (Die another day): Dvd cover Analysis

James Bond is a on going film series that has been very successful in British and international media. The james bond film series usually contains James Bond and a woman. In this film it is Halle Berry and Pierce Brosnan. Here is my analysis on the Dvd cover and how it could help when creating our Dvd cover or magazine front cover.

The First thing i notice is the name of the film. "Die another day". It is going across the top of the dvd cover in Bold orange writing, also audiences wont know that this is a james bond film, until they notice the 007 under the name of the film. Audiences know 007 as James bond and will regonise the film.

The next thing i notice on this James Bond Ultimate edition dvd cover is the picture of Pierce Brosnan and Halle Berry. We see Halle Berry Walking out of the sea with the sun shining on her in the background. This tells me and the audience that maybe this place is set somewhere hot and sunny and also that she maybe one of the main characters. Then the more dominant picture of Pierce Brosnan is holding a gun by his hand with a suit on. This tells the audience that he is most likely going to be James Bond.

Finally i notice the bottom the of the dvd cover, where there are 3 seperate pictures of different things. On the left side picture we see two people kissing. this tells me that there will be some romance in the film. In the middle picture We see two cars, this tells the audiencs that there maybe a car chase of some sort. In the right side picture We see 007 with a gun in his hand, this tells me that this film will contain voilence or action.

I think this film dvd cover will help us when creating our own. I think we should take ideas on how the film dvd shows the genres in the film to get the target audience and how the main characters are betrayed.

Avatar Poster Analysis

This is the poster for the film Avatar released in 2009, now the largest box office selling film of all time. The image of the eye is very bright and contrasts the dark backround of the poster making it stand out, it is staring directly at the audience making it engaging and almost intense. The fact that we cannot see the other eye creates a sense of enigma and teases the viewers, one is exposed and inviting yet the other isnt included at all, suggesting there might be a dark side to this character, also indicated by the colour scheme. The seemingly human like face is blue which implies the films genre: sci-fi. The small glittery details across her face also show there is some magic/fantasy involved. Based on these factors the poster will obviously then appeal to people who enjoy the highlighted genres. The characters femininity is evoked through emphasis on pretty features like her lips, cheekbones and eyelashes- focus on aesthetically pleasing characters often signal romance storylines. Another important part of the poster is the above top caption 'from the director of the film Titanic'.. This will entice many film go-ers based on the vast success of the Directors previous film- a high quality director should mean the film is worth watching. Titanic is interestingly neither sci-fi or fantasy but nevertheless the prestige of the director is often a large selling point. The title caption is isolated and simplistic, further creating enigma; it gives nothing away and leaves the audience wanting to know more.

Details we may try to recreate in our poster are; highlighting of gender (provocative adressal of femininity should entice our predominantly male target audience), the air of mysteriousness, and the heightened engagement between our audience and protaganist (through means of eye contact).

The Dark Knight Poster Analysis

This is a poster for the 2008 film "The Dark Knight" the second installment in Christopher Nolan's batman series.
The Background of the poster is made up of joker cards, which links in with the villain in the film, who is called the "Joker", and as you get towards the middle of the poster the shape of "Batman" can be seen.
The Batman shape is distorted, because of the cards and what appears to be bloodstains across his mouth which again links the look of the "Joker".
Resting on the page is a scalpel, which appears as though it shouldn't be part of the poster, but links the violence of the "Joker" in to the theme of the film.
Dotted around the image of "Batman" is quotes which "The Joker" says throughout the film.
At the bottom of the page the logo's Warner Brothers and DC comics are shown as they are very successful companies and are there to show off thir reputation and gain an audience looking for a good film.
This is a dark poster which links the theme of the film with the character being portrayed, This is shown with blood stains and a scalpel on the page. What We hope to gain from this poster is an air of mystery surrounding the main image, and the audience to look closer at the poster and realise new interesting details.

Task: Kill Bill VOL 2: Poster analysis

Kill Bill Vol 2 is an action thriller film created by Quentin Tarantino. It is film we should look at as the dominant lead character is female which is similar to our film. Here is my analysis of the film poster and how we could use this poster when creating our own.

The first thing i notice is the knife or sword going straight across the middle of the poster. This tells me and the audience that this film may contain sword fighting and be full of action. Also on this sword there are asian lettering going down it. This tells me and the audience that this film will mix cultures from Asia to the USA.

The next thing i notice is the name of the film, "Kill Bill Vol 2". It is in big bold lettering and is coloured in red. This tells me that this film will contain voilence and most probably alot of fighting.

I next notice the six characters in show. They are all coloured in back and white against the yellow background. I think this has been done to make these characters stand out on the poster. Also, all the characters have got a serious face on with even one holding a sword above her head. This tells me that this film is garenteed to contain some sort of fighting sequence with it being intense and full of action.

The final thing i notice about the film is the slogan on the left hand side of the poster, "revenge is a dish best served cold". This tells me that this film will contain voilence but may included a bitter sweet death.

The poster makes each point clearly stated with the name of the film in red, the slogan white and the producer of the film in yellow. I think this way the audience gets to see all the important parts to the film poster. We should take ideas of how colour schemes are used.
